Policies
Neutral Space
Providing a space that is neutral is of the utmost importance. Art Play Learn's staff will strive to create a space that is accessible to people of all religious convictions and participation, including those who choose not to participate in any religion at all. This means that we will:
-
refrain from decorating the space in celebration of ANY holidays,
-
refrain from promoting ANY holidays in or outside of class curriculum,
-
refrain from making assignments that conflict with any religious point of view (If we have inadvertently made an assignment that conflicts with your religious point of view, please let us know immediately so that we can make an adjustment),
-
refrain from teaching any curriculum from any specific religion's point of view (This may mean that your specific religious point of view will not be taken into consideration when teaching science and social studies. By registering, you certify that you are ok with your student being taught science and social studies from a secular point of view.),
Art Play Learn's staff will strive to create a space that is free from danger to students with "epipen allergies" and will strive to create a space in which your student will not be offered, encouraged to eat, or disparaged due to refusing any food product or school supply that could make them sick or is against the personal values of their family (vegetarian/vegan/etc).
Art Play Learn will do whatever is reasonably possible to accommodate physically disabled students and caregivers to be able to access and use the space. Permanent changes to the structure of the building may not be possible.
Art Play Learn actively supports and encourages participation by people of all genders and sexualities. Students and their families have the right to ask to be referred to using any gender pronouns, including non-gender specific pronouns.
No disparagement: Students and their families can expect to be treated respectfully at all times by all people connected to Art Play Learn. Behavior that is deemed to be disparaging to any individual based on their gender, sexuality, nation of origin, native language, English speaking competency, immigration status, race, age, participation in or lack of participation in any religion, or physical or mental abilities will be dealt with actively. Art Play Learn reserves the right to ask a family or staff member to discontinue participation in its programs based on disparaging behavior without the benefit of a refund or payment for services not yet rendered.
Students and their families agree to be bound by the same neutral space policies that Art Play Learn's staff is bound by and that are listed above. This is not an exhaustive list. Other specific policies may be added as it becomes clear they are necessary.
Positive-Peaceful Behavior Management
Much research has been done on the various types of behavior management systems and interventions. A positive and peaceful approach has been demonstrated to be beneficial and constructive to learning environments. Our staff and instructors will strive to create learning environments that encourage students to make wanted behavior choices and reward those choices. We will not use :
-
corporal punishments of any kind,
-
time-outs, stop-lights or other shaming techniques, or
-
name-calling, teasing, or any other kind of psychologically or emotionally damaging behavior.
For more information about the types of strategies that may be used, please click on the underlined words to see the PBIS website.
